Anyone can generate amazing AI images — you just gotta know what words to tell your AI.
It’s really quite simple to make great looking art using an AI like Stable Diffusion.
This guide will give you a break down on how to write the right words (a.k.a great prompts) and a quick headstart on creating amazing images using the txt2img functionality in the Stablematic playground. It’s especially amazing and easy to make great image backgrounds like this:
What is a prompt?
A prompt is a set of instructions in the form of a text description of a subject that you wish to create using an AI model. In the case of Stablematic, you are using Stable Diffusion models to generate images based on specific instructions e.g. “Bunny with headphones on his ears, 3D rendering by Ron English, trending on cgsociety, pop surreal, photo illustration”.
A prompt can be as simple as a single line of vague text like “bunny wearing headphones” or several lines of text to request more specific details and styles in the image. With Stable Diffusion and Stablematic, you can also use negative prompts. The negative prompt section which is just below the prompt section in the window of the txt2img tab enables you to tell the model to remove specific elements from the final image output.
Using Stablematic this can also be done via outpainting or img2img.
A guide on how to make good prompts for AI image generation
As a basic rule of thumb: a good prompt should contain the most basic elements of a complete sentence:
TL;DR: Prompt Formula
Art Medium
+ The actual things you want in the image
+ Art Styles (could be an artist or an actual style like Dada)
+ Modifications (extra details on how the image should look)
+ Any other details you want e.g. 'trending on cgsociety’
A good prompt should contain the most basic elements of a complete sentence, including a noun, a verb, and an adjective. These elements are important for generating interesting subjects.
By adding more words which relate to what you want the AI to generate for you, makes it easier for the art generator to understand the preferred image. Adjectives are very important in prompt engineering because they infuse feelings into your work, making it more realistic and colourful. Therefore, try to include multiple adjectives in your prompts.
If you wish to add a watermark to your final image, you can add your name to the text prompt–this also helps to mimic your style.
If you follow the prompt formula, you can see what are the key things to try include in your prompt for a more instructive AI generated image.
In short, it is good to ponder whether the prompt answers these questions:
- What do you see?
- What about it is in the image?
- How does it look?
A good prompt that answers these questions for example would be: “a rabbit wearing an orange sweater, black and yellow headphones in a realistic portrait”.
